Yoshi’s Island was released by Nintendo in 1995 and was pretty much immediately adored. You play as the titular Yoshis as they try to reunited Baby Mario and his kidnapped twin brother Baby Luigi. Yoshi’s Island seems to be a part of the Mushroom Kingdom, but it is unclear if the island can make its own laws or if the law of the Kingdom also rules here.

POLICE CAR BRUTALITY
The Driver series began in 1999 when GT Interactive Software published a game for the PlayStation titled Driver. Eventually more games in the series were released. They had titles like Driver 2 and Driver 3. You play as an NYPD detective that goes undercover by impressing organized crime with your excellent driving skills. This week I’ve prepared a focused, short, post on examining how the police that don’t know he is undercover deal with him.
SPACE WAR!
Star Fox 64 was one of Nintendo’s highest selling games. The reason is that it is really fun to fly around in outer space. Also because they just built a nice game. I didn’t take any classes on the law of outer space, and I don’t want to do too much research this week, but I do think it would be fun to apply some legal theories to an intergalactic war.
Mushroom Kingom Rules of the Road
The Mario Kart franchise is possibly my favorite video game franchise. My dad would play Mario Kart 64 with me and my brother all the time. Double Dash was really cool, but I didn’t get to play it too much. Mario Kart Wii was a nice update, but Mario Kart 8 is the gold standard. The few problems I have with it are mere nitpicks. The legal problems these racers would get into in America would be much more grievous. Mario and friends are never arrested while racing, let’s see why.
BAR UNIVERSE
Tapper was an arcade game released in 1983. You play a bartender that has to serve all of the customers in the bar until they leave. It sounds monotonous, but is surprisingly addictive. You slide beers down the bar toward customers and if they are not served they march toward you until they reach you and slide you down the bar like the beers you didn’t serve them. Alcohol has quite a bit of rules in America, so we’ve got some things we can examine this week.
SKATE PARK WORLD
Skateboarding is cool. Some of the stuff done looks impossible and it feels pretty fun. Eventually, we had the technology to replicate the actions of skateboarders and the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series was born. Starting in 1999 various publishers have been creating games so that even the uncoordinated can enjoy the thrill of skateboarding. It does seem like they play a little fast and loose with the rules of society in some of these games. Today I’m going to examine some moments from the Tony Hawk series.
PRISON CITY PT. 2
Today I will be examining what laws exist inside of Arkham City. The creation of Arkham City was covered in last week’s post. This week we’ll be looking at what happens in the city now that it does exist. This will not be a complete list, but it should be an interesting look at the city.
PRISON CITY PT. 1
Batman: Arkham City is the second game made by Rocksteady Studios in the Batman Arkham video game series. In this game the city of Gotham has gotten so bad that the prison of Arkham Asylum has gotten so big it is now a whole city, composed of a lot of the “undesirable” parts of town. That sentence there is not that long, but its implications are numerous. Today I’ll only be examining how a part of a city became another city that is just a prison. Next week I’ll examine what laws exist inside this new city.
FIGHT CLUB CITY
This week I’ll be investigating how the world of River City Ransom operates after the evil dude Slick takes over. The game starts with a screen that states that Slick has taken the city captive, and he has taken Ryan’s girlfriend hostage. He has gangs protecting different parts of the city now. If his demands (which are never articulated) aren’t met he promises something bad will happen. Ryan, and if you have someone to play with, Ryan’s friend Adam, begin a city-wide beat down to find Slick and get their city back. Slick makes a lot of changes to society, and these changes are fun to examine.
PRIMAL RAGE!
Primal Rage was a game released by Atari to arcades, and then released again to several home consoles. It was awesome. The game takes place in an alternate timeline where a meteor strike has messed Earth up big time. Now the humans that are left all follow one of seven monsters that came up from Earth’s crust and fight each other. In the game you control one of the seven fighters and compete against the other ones. Also a multiplayer function exists where you and your friends can fight against each other with these beasts. Obviously, the idea of law in a society like this is very basic. I’m going to examine laws we currently have now and how they might apply or be altered by Primal Rage’s society.
